Life at Oxbridge

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to attend a prestigious university like Cambridge or Oxford? Have you always been curious about these unique institutions? If so, this article is written for you! By the end of this page, you will gain insight into the enriching and fun experience of studying at Cambridge or Oxford, and you will find yourself buzzing with motivation!

1. Work

First of all, the majority of students choose these universities because of their passion for their subjects. While the workload can occasionally be demanding, you will discover yourself more motivated than ever in this academic environment. Your lectures and supervisions will be led by experts in their respective fields, adding an extra layer of excitement to your learning experience. Additionally, you will be assigned to a Director of Studies who will be a tutor from your field of studies and will be responsible for overseeing your academic progress and development.

2. Accommodation

If you apply to one of the older colleges, you can look forward to an enchanting Harry Potter-like experience! Picture yourself wandering through unique corridors steeped in centuries of history! However, if you opt for a newer college, you’ll enjoy modern amenities such as trendy cafés, a range of facilities, and in some cases even access to swimming pools.

3. Study spots

In both Cambridge and Oxford, you will find a multitude of study spaces. Each college has its own library, and for specific subjects, there are dedicated libraries as well. If you fancy a change of scenery, the towns typically have public libraries to explore. Moreover, both towns offer a plethora of charming cafes, catering to various vibes and preferences. And on those delightful days of good weather, there’s nothing quite like studying in the fresh air in your college garden.

4. Dining

Each college offers catering services, and most students enjoy the cheap lunch and evening meals in the college butteries. These meals not only taste great but also provide a fantastic opportunity to catch up with college friends between lectures and study sessions. On the weekends, brunch is a student favourite, with the delightful smell of freshly baked crossaints and baked beans welcoming your Saturday mornings.

Furthermore, all colleges offer the option of elegant dining at formals. These are three-course meals with the option of wine for drinks. These formals offer a unique experience and serve as an excellent way to celebrate birthdays, or simply enjoy a memorable evening with your college friends.

5. College families

When you first arrive at the university, you’ll receive a warm welcome from your college parents. Typically, these parents are fellow students studying the same subject as you, and they’ll be there to assist you as you settle into university life and beyond. Feel free to reach out to them with any questions or concerns related to your subject, college, or general life matters.

As the year progresses, and you become closer to your college peers, you might find yourself interested in coupling up and taking on a parental role. You can propose to someone, and at the end of the year, there’s a formal event to celebrate all these college ‘marriages’.These married couples then have the privilege of welcoming incoming freshers as their ‘kids’ in the following year.

6. Societies

In both Cambridge and Oxford, a plethora of student societies offer opportunities to pursue a wide range of interests and hobbies. Whether you are into sports, music, or cooking, there’s a club for you. Depending on your preferred style of socializing, you can also consider joining drinking clubs, wine tasting clubs, or, if you prefer quieter evenings, reading clubs or board game groups might be an excellent choice for you.

7. Wellbeing

Keep in mind that at the university, everyone is there to provide help and support to ensure your wellbeing and academic success. Besides your Director of Studies (who oversees your academic progress), you’ll have a personal tutor dedicated to monitoring your mental wellbeing and being available for conversations when needed. Each college also has its own college nurses providing wellbeing services, and the university also offers a counseling service for additional support. Most societies also organize regular wellbeing events to add some joy to your busy study days, from yoga sessions to pet walking, as well as numerous gatherings featuring pizza and cake.

In conclusion, the unique experiences, academic support, and vibrant social life at Cambridge and Oxford make these universities truly exceptional places to attend.
